1 x Full time – 38.75 hours per week (Monday – Friday, including Bank Holidays)
6 x Full time – 38.75 hours per week (Monday – Sunday, on a 7 week rota, 5 working days per week, shift allowance payable)
6 x Part time 15.5 hours per week (Saturday and Sunday)
Service:
The Museums and Records Service is part of Cultural Services, Portsmouth City Council. We look after approximately one million objects and items relating to the cultural and natural heritage of the city and run six sites which are open to the public: these include the City Museum and Records, the
D-Day Museum, Southsea Castle, Cumberland House Natural History Museum, Charles Dickens’ Birthplace and Eastney Beam Engine House.
What is the role?
You will provide a range of information and services to ensure visitors
and residents have an enjoyable and memorable visit. The job is extremely varied and can often involve working in a very busy environment. Your duties will include meeting and greeting customers, selling merchandise and tickets and answering telephone enquiries. In addition you will provide information on exhibits and extract information from customers in the form of satisfaction surveys. You will be flexible as you will be required to work at any site as needed. In addition you may be required to work evenings.
The posts are seasonal and you will therefore need to be available from the 1 April to 30 September 2010. Any leave accumulated during this time will be paid to you as part of your salary.
Who is the person?
You need:
1. Excellent customer service skills to welcome and engage the customer.
2. Excellent communication skills as you will be dealing with a range of queries whether they be face to face or over the telephone. An additional language, preferably French, would be an advantage.
3. To be an excellent team player, able to fit into the current team and willing to help out other team members as required.
4. To have good levels of literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
5. To have experience of cash handling.
6. Be a flexible person who can adapt quickly to different work situations and locations
7. The ability to sell museum services and merchandise would be an advantage.
8. To have an enthusiasm for museums, galleries and archives, history, art or natural history or any other of the other subjects covered by the museums and records service.
9. Be available for the whole period from the 1 April to 30 September 2010 without holiday as you will be covering permanent staff's leave.
