The Service
The Sensory Impairment Service comprises of Specialist Teacher Advisers, Communication Support Workers, intervenors and a Paediatric Rehabilitation Officer for Visually Impaired pupils. We work with sensory impaired children and young people from 0-19 years of age, at home or other pre-school settings, in schools and colleges. Our aim is to maximise the educational opportunities for every individual child, working in partnership with parents and carers, teachers and colleagues in other agencies.
What is the role?
You will be supporting a deafblind child within a variety of early years settings and will essentially be “their eyes and ears”. You will provide opportunities for them to explore and experiment and to give them confidence to become an active learner. You will need to ensure that they are able to anticipate and understand what is about to happen. You are not there to make everything easy and straightforward. You will need to create situations where they need to think for him or herself to solve problems, not to jump in too soon.
Who is the person?
You need to:
1. Have an NVQ3 in Childcare
2. Have knowledge of Total Communication Approaches together with Braille, Moon and BSL
3. Have experience of working with children with a sensory impairment / disabilities in an educational setting.
4. Have experience of working with professionals from different Education, Health and Social Care agencies.
5. Have the experience of using different strategies and approaches with individual children.
6. Have the ability to adapt and devise activities and materials.
7. Be able to work in a range of settings e.g. home/school.
8. Have experience of record keeping.
9. Have excellent communication skills
10. Be able to work independently and also as part of a team.
