Environment and Transport


The vision for the directorate is to help ensure that we have a City to be proud
of, and in particular to:

•   Keep the city clean.
•   Strive to make the city more attractive.
•   Assist in keeping the city safe and healthy.
•   Improve accessibility within and beyond the city.
•   Ensure residents, businesses and consumers are supported and informed.

The key services that are responsible for achieving this are:

•   Planning (including development control and strategic policy).
•   Environmental Management (including highways , waste management
     and engineering consultancy ).
•   Traffic (including traffic management, road safety, passenger
     transport and parking management).
•   Public Protection (including trading standards, pollution control and
     food standards).

The type of projects and work you could experience include:

•   Various challenges posed by the Copnor Bridge Replacement, for
     example traffic management, residents’ access and facilitating
     successful partnerships with external companies.
•   Northern Quarter Redevelopment - Working with external partners,
     regenerating one of the most important sites in the city, the city centre.
     A substantial part of the Northern Quarter Redevelopment is raising the
     quality and quantity of the retail industry, making it a place where
     people want to live, work and invest to ensure future viability. It is also
     a project which is striving to achieve targets of the highest design
     quality.
•   Maximising the potential of the Public Finance Initiative contract and
     delivering continuous service improvements to residents and visitors.
•   Joint working with other directorates to reduce anti-social behaviour
     and crime, e.g. Trading Standards.
